Acute and chronic thoracic pain is a common problem seen in physiotherapy practice today. There is very little anatomical, biomechanical or clinical research available for guidance in both evaluation and treatment planning. This text presents a biomechanical model of thoracic function which depends on the regional anatomy. The model is empirical and wait validation through research. In the meantime, it provides a solid base from which the practising clinician can evaluate and treat the painful thorax.
