Holographic universe simulations are interesting to contemplate because they form a prism for understanding our own situation better. Many prominent physicists have said holographic universe simulations will require no unknown physics, just greater computer speed. This is wrongheaded. In order to make a holographic universe simulation we will need to understand much unknown social psychology - namely, the logic of sentience and meaningful perception. In other words, if we cannot program a brain-mind theory into the simulation, then the people in it will not be self-aware. Yet, if a holographic universe simulation cannot be programmed with people experiencing sentience, then it is just cartoon time. The concept of holographic universe simulations becomes a vehicle for great discussions that force us to reckon with what we know in this paradigm and what we do not know, and what we will be required to know in order to create a holographic universe simulation. It becomes like an ultimate thought experiment that may inform every science that is in need of a brain-mind theory, from all the social sciences, to brain neuroscience, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and robotics. The challenge before us is to present a brain-mind theory capable of explaining the appearance of deductive inferencing, inductive inferencing, and abductive inferencing, all executed by processing 2D bits of information that become enlivened and experienced as 3D perceptions of reality - the sine qua non of holographic technology.
